gardenfest 2008
Today, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the District IV, Florida Federation of Garden Clubs and Duval County Extension Service is sponsoring The GardenFest. Everyone is welcome. Bring your friends. The program, presented by speakers, is full of great information for the Florida gardener. Topics include: Turn Trash to Treasure; Eco-Friendly Landscaping; Bird, Bees and Butterflies and other interesting subjects. Morning refreshments and drinks for lunch provided. lights on after school
Today, 1 to 4 p.m., KidzArt in St. Johns invites families to a free, fun Lights On After School event at Bayside Village Shopping Center, 1820 State Road 13, Suite 2 in St. Johns to celebrate the quality after school programs that keep kids safe and inspire learning after school hours. Nov. 22, Julington Elementary School will host the Third Annual Golf Tournament at the St. Johns Golf and Country Club. To be successful they need support. guana bike tour
Oct. 19, 8 to 10 a.m. Explore the upland trail systems located within the GTM Research Reserve. Volunteer and Florida Master Naturalist Craig O’Neal will lead the tour and cover topics such as the diverse and co-existing eco-systems, wildlife, and historical points of interest located within the Reserve. The tour will cover 6 to 8 miles round trip. Bring your own bike; trail & beach bikes only. This is a moderately strenuous activity. Helmet, closed toe shoes and water are required. Bring bug spray. Space is limited. Reservations are required. Call (904) 823-4500 to reserve your spot. Meet at the Guana Dam trailhead pavilion. Entrance fee $3 per vehicle, (annual GTM pass holders FREE.)

helping hands
Oct. 24, 11 a.m., The Helping Hands of St. Johns will meet at the Peoples Bank on County Road 210 to make Trick or Treat Bags for the homeless children at Sulzbacher Center. The group has no dues, officers or stress. It relies only on donations of goods and services from the community. Anyone is welcome to join. ancient city kids day
Oct. 25, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Special Events field on Castillo Drive, St. Augustine, is the annual festival for families. Admission is free. There will be more than thirty booths and interactive exhibits for children and adults to participate in together.

monster bash
Oct. 24, 6-8:30 p.m. the Coastal Community Center presents the 2nd Annual Monster Mash. Bring all your fiendish friends and creepy companions. DJ Dan will spin your favorite tunes. helping hands
The Helping Hands of St. Johns County, a volunteer organization, dedicated to helping others in the community through small projects monthly, recently donated 55 Christmas trees to the Bayview Nursing Home and Hospice of St. Augustine. The members donated and decorated small trees that will be used for residents’ rooms and homes. The tree trimming party was just one of the many projects that the women have completed in the last few months. In October, they filled 100 Trick or Treat Bags for the children at the Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless. The November project is Thanksgiving dinners that will be given through Christ’s Cupboard at the Celebration Lutheran Church on Roberts Road. The next meeting will be at 11 a.m., Nov. 21 at the Peoples Bank on County Road 210. Anyone wishing to donate non-perishable food items for the Thanksgiving Dinner Boxes or frozen turkeys may contact jacqphil@aol.com.

golf tournament
Oct. 28, the Creekside Knights Fall Golf Tournament will be held at the Champions Club in Julington Creek Plantation. It is a Captains Choice format with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $100 per player and includes 18 holes of golf, greens fee, cart, hot dog and picnic dinner served after the tournament, drink tickets and more. Nov. 7, 5-9 p.m. Butterfield Garage Art Gallery hosts the opening of Angelika S. Luginbuhl’s inaugural exhibit of “Just Cats” during the First Friday Artwalk. Luginbuhl’s handmade pastels, oil paintings, pencil drawings and watercolors depict a wide variety of domestic and wild cats in a myriad of poses including abstract, whimsical and serious studies. logo contest
During the month of October, PACT (Prevent, Act, Change, Together) Teens is holding a logo contest open to young artists in grades 6-8. PACT Teens known as DDT21 wants its own identity that will be recognized in the community as they work to educate teens about underage drinking. Contestants must create a logo design following contest guidelines.
* Contestants must be enrolled in middle school in St. Johns County
* Entries must be submitted as an e-mail attachment.
* Entries must contain the contestant’s name, address and telephone number in the body of the e-mail.
* Entries will be judged on the strength of the message against underage drinking, originality, relevance to youth and the artwork’s ability to be enlarged or reduced while maintaining its integrity.
Entries become the property of DDT21 and will not be returned to contestants. Submissions must be received by Oct. 31 at 5 p.m. E-mail entries to lisa@pactprevention.org. The winner will be announced and receive the grand prize at Teen Night at Ketterlinus Gym on Nov. 1. For more information contact Lisa Loehnert at (904) 829-6261.

christmas traditions
Dec. 7, noon to 5 p.m. The Garden Club of St. Augustine invites you to the 40th Annual Christmas Tour of Homes, Grand Illumination, Christmas Parade and British Night Watch during this weekend. This year’s tour will showcase private homes around Maria Sanchez Lake and the bay in the historic area. These beautiful homes were built in 1873, 1886, 1905, the 1920s and more recent years. Your ticket will include a delightful tea and Boutique at the coastal Community Center. This year the Garden Club awarded three college scholarships, sent six children and gifts to Camp Wekive and gave away 1500 trees for Arbor Day. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
